Getting to Know You: Jenn
Some careers have a beginning, middle, and next chapter. Jennifer’s Christopher House story has enough chapters to fill a book.
Our new Director of Nursing Services has been part of the Christopher House family since the very beginningโbut her story actually started at the Belmont Home in 1994, when she began working in the kitchen. Since then, Jennifer has worn more hats than just about anyone: Activities, CNA, LPN, RN, Unit Manager, Case Manager, Assistant Director of Nursing, and now, Director of Nursing Services.
In 2004, Jennifer was part of the first Inter-Care program, which brought together CNAs from 10 Worcester nursing homes to attend LPN school. In 2007, she continued through an LPN-to-RN bridge program. Both opportunities came through Christopher House and helped shape the career she has today.
So, when Jennifer says Christopher House is her “second family,” she really means it.
If you asked her coworkers to describe her in one word, Jennifer thinks they’d choose committed. And as she settles into her new role, she’s focused on learning, growing, and becoming the best leader she can be. One piece of advice she carries with her is simple: “Be coachable.”
Of course, every busy morning needs a little fuel. After working the 7โ3 shift for 20 years, Jennifer is definitely an early bird. Her coffee order is very specific: a large hot French vanilla swirl with extra-extra cream and no sugar. But the little thing guaranteed to make her day better? A Diet Coke from a can. Yes, the can matters!
When she’s not at Christopher House, Jennifer enjoys cleaning, cooking, spending time with family, and recharging. She loves fallโgive her hoodies and football and she’s happyโand one of her favorite family traditions is their Christmas Eve party.
She’s a beach-over-mountains person, a cats-over-dogs person, and when asked to choose between sweet and salty, she wisely chooses both. Cookies ‘n Cream ice cream, however, earns a special place on her guilty-pleasure list.
Here’s something you might not know: Jennifer is pretty good at braiding hair. She’s also a Lord of the Rings fan, and one of her favorite quotes comes from Bilbo Baggins: “Not all those who wander are lost.”
If Jennifer could do a little wandering of her own tomorrow, she’d head straight to Scotland. And if she could instantly become an expert at something? Financial advisingโ”ha-ha,” as she puts it!
Then there’s Dave Matthews Band.
Calling Jennifer a fan might be an understatement. She’s seen DMB an “obscene amount of times,” and her pick for the Christopher House staff playlist is “Break Free.” But if her life had a theme song, she’d switch artists for one very fitting choice: “Gonna Fly Now,” the theme from Rocky.
Considering a career that’s taken her from the kitchen to Director of Nursing Services, we’d say that’s a pretty fitting soundtrack.
Jennifer also recommends The Alchemist, which feels right at home in a story that’s been filled with learning, growth, and quite a journey of its own.
Through all those years and all those roles, one thing hasn’t changed: the importance of the people around her.
“Christopher House is my second family.”
